How to choose a GLP-1 program

Step 1 · Eligibility

Check whether you may be eligible

Weight management GLP-1s are generally labeled for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. A clinician makes the final call.

  • Know your BMI and any weight-related conditions
  • List your current medications and medical history
  • Not for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2

TipUse our BMI calculator before you book a consultation.

Step 2 · Insurance

Check your insurance first

If your plan covers Wegovy or Zepbound, that is usually the cheapest route. Many plans need prior authorization.

  • Check your plan formulary for Wegovy and Zepbound
  • Ask whether prior authorization is required
  • If commercially insured, look at manufacturer savings programs

TipIf coverage is denied, you can usually appeal the decision.

Step 3 · Real cost

Compare the real monthly cost

Add medication, membership and visit fees together, and check whether the price rises with your dose.

  • Add medication, membership, visit and shipping fees
  • Check whether the price rises as your dose increases
  • Watch for 3, 6 or 12 month plans billed upfront

Step 4 · Your clinician

Talk to a licensed clinician

Whichever route you choose, a clinician should review your history, current medications and risks before prescribing.

  • A clinician licensed in your state
  • A review of your health history and current medications
  • Follow-up visits as your dose changes

TipBe wary of any program that prescribes without reviewing your history.

Step 5 · Start & follow-up

Start low and follow up

Most GLP-1s start at a low dose and increase gradually to limit side effects. Stay in touch with your clinician, track how you feel, and review your total cost after the first few months.

  • Expect gradual dose increases, as your clinician directs
  • Report persistent nausea, vomiting or stomach pain
  • Pair treatment with enough protein and strength training

TipNever change your dose without talking to your prescriber.
