Restaurant portions are the problem, not restaurants. Order less than feels normal, eat the protein first, and expect to leave food. The awkward part is rarely the food itself, it is the attention that comes with a half-eaten plate, and that is worth having a plan for before you sit down.
If eating out has started to feel like something to avoid rather than manage, that is worth noticing. Withdrawing from meals with other people is a common early sign that food has become stressful, and it is worth mentioning to your prescriber.
For how this fits alongside the rest of eating and training on a GLP-1, see Eating and Training on a GLP-1: The Complete Guide.
Ordering
Starters as mains work well, since the portion is closer to what you can actually eat. Sharing plates work for the same reason.
Ask for sauces and dressings on the side. Fat slows an already slow stomach, and having control over how much goes on is easier than sending something back.
Grilled, baked or steamed over fried. Not for virtue, but because fried food is the most reliable way to feel unwell two hours later.
Ask for a box when the food arrives rather than at the end. Taking half away immediately removes the decision and the plate-watching.
At the table
Protein first. Fullness arrives early and without warning, so the first thing you eat is the thing you actually get.
Slowly, with pauses. Conversation helps here, since talking naturally spaces out mouthfuls.
Stop at first fullness rather than at the plate being empty. Overshooting is what causes the miserable hour afterward.
Go easy on carbonated drinks and alcohol, both of which make things harder.
The social part
This is the bit most articles skip and most people actually find difficult.
You do not owe anyone an explanation for what is on your plate. If you want a line ready, something ordinary works better than something detailed: you had a late lunch, you are saving room, you are not very hungry today. People move on quickly.
If you would rather be open about taking a medication, that is entirely your choice and it can make repeated meals with the same people easier. It is also nobody’s business, and there is no obligation either way.
Hosts can be the harder case, since a half-eaten plate reads as a judgement on the cooking. Saying plainly that the food was good and your appetite is small usually settles it.
Buffets and set menus
Buffets are easier than they look, because you control the portion completely. Take a small amount, start with protein, go back if you want more.
Set menus with multiple courses are harder. Eating a little of each and leaving the rest is normal, and there is no requirement to finish anything.
Timing around your injection
If the days after injecting are your worst, avoid booking anything significant then. Planning meals out for later in the week is one of the more effective adjustments available and costs nothing.
If you feel unwell mid-meal
Stop eating, sip water, and step outside for a few minutes if you can. Overshooting fullness usually passes within an hour.
Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting is different and needs medical attention rather than fresh air.
Order smaller and expect to leave food, and portion sizes on a GLP-1 covers what normal now looks like. If eating out has become something to avoid rather than manage, that is worth mentioning to your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions
What if I cannot finish anything?
Completely normal. Order smaller, take the rest away, and do not treat it as a problem.
Do I have to tell people I am on medication?
No. It is your information and there is no obligation to share it.
Can I drink alcohol at dinner?
There is no blanket prohibition, though it often worsens nausea and reflux and affects you differently now. Less than before is a reasonable starting point.
What is the safest cuisine?
Any, with attention to portion and fat. Grilled proteins with vegetables and a small starch works widely.
Should I eat beforehand so I am not hungry?
Usually unnecessary. A small protein snack earlier can help if you are worried about arriving very empty.
How do I handle a tasting menu?
Tell the restaurant when booking that you eat small portions. Most will accommodate it without fuss.
